PRESENT FUGITIVE
Present Fugitive features Ruth Pastine’s nearly monochromatic color-field paintings that challenge preconceptions about the perceptual experience through the mercurial shift of warm and cool color identities. Engaging complementary color systems, Pastine transforms the materiality of the canvas surface into an optically immaterial experience. The dichotomy of opposition is explored through the sensual presence of surface in concert with the ephemerality of light, materializing paintings that paradoxically bring the viewer’s attention to the seamless hand-painted surfaces, which optically dissipate and pulse towards their edges. The Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation acquired Ruth Pastine’s iconic Primary Blue Orange #2 for its permanent collection.
