Conquer Surrender features Ruth Pastine’s Green Orange Violet Series that engages the iconic structure of the square, vertical, and horizontal canvas. Pastine’s minimalist works address phenomena of color perception and color relativity, and examine the relationship between materiality and immateriality through the sensual presence of surface and the ethereality of light. Challenging preconceptions, Pastine explores the subtle character and nuance of color through the admixture of primary hues to create the Secondary Color Series. Her manipulation of color, light, and matter explores the shifting and contradictory sensations of light and darkness, weight and weightlessness, depth and luminosity.
