Chance Rays features Ruth Pastine’s nearly monochromatic square paintings that engage the artist’s Red Green, Blue Orange, and Yellow Violet Series. Pastine’s minimalist works address phenomena of color perception and color relativity— the perception of influence between adjacent colors, and emphasize the event of the viewer’s encounter with the painting. Pastine’s paintings are built up with countless small brushstrokes and appear to pulse towards their edges with an inner luminosity. Pastine advances her minimalist work through rigorous formal systems that engage the admixture of opposing complementary hues in optically seamless gradients. Challenging our preconceptions, Pastine investigates the immateriality of matter, the subtle character and nuance of color, and the ethereality of light. Pastine reveals an optically dematerialized surface, further questioning the visual experience and redefines the perceptual field.
