PRESENCE ABSENCE

The Presence Absence Spectrum (2021-2022) debuted publicly for a large, cathedral-like installation, in my solo exhibition, Technicolor Sublime, which featured thirty-nine new works at the Frederick R. Weisman Museum of Art. Presence Absence Spectrum (2021–22) explores the tension between the perception of color, luminosity, and space across six vertical panels of equal proportions, installed side-by-side at 24-inch intervals. What began as a primary-color triptych (red, yellow, and blue) expanded into a full spectrum with their complementary counterparts (green, violet, and orange), evolving an immersive, multi-panel installation. To achieve a heightened level of luminosity for this series, I experimented with an entirely new palette of pigments. When the initial layers of color failed to yield the optical resonance I envisioned, I returned to the core of the paintings, reclaiming the foundational white surface at the center of each panel. This spontaneous breakthrough was a revelation, evolving the direction for the entire series. Ultimately, it is the stark absence of color at the center of each canvas that heightens the structural luminosity and underscores the elusive presence of each painting.
